Thoughts from the Deep
Some years after we got married, we decided it was time to take the next step. And for a pair of long-time thespians, that step was to start a theatre company, and thus, Theatre Kraken was born.
We like to play in the darker end of the pool, but we strive to make sure it never gets so dark that it’s not fun anymore and to keep everyone as safe as we can, because that’s how you get the best theatre — well that, and it’s basic human decency.
We have lots of thoughts about that sort of thing — some of them might even approach wisdom — and we wanted a way to share them in a longer form than is really doable via social media.
Who are we?
But who are we, exactly? We’re Don and Brenda, who each came from our own theatrical backgrounds before combining our powers to become even better.
Brenda’s a born and bred musical theatre baby. Her parents met through theatre, which led to her spending a lot of time in and around theatres growing up. She helped her mom paint many sets and her dad hang many lights, and has had at least one hand in just about every other element of theatre throughout the years. So she’s pretty sure no one was terribly surprised when she married someone who was just as passionate about the art.
Don didn’t find theatre until a little later in life, but once he found it, he knew he was home. He made up for lost time by getting plenty of training and by founding his first theatre company, the New World Theatre Project. With skills in directing, sound design, production management, and most other areas, he’s a pretty well rounded theatre artist too. So his decision to join forces with a fellow thespian was probably not too shocking to his friends and family, either.
Why are we writing this blog?
Like we said earlier, we have lots of thoughts. We’ve been doing this, in one way or another, for a long time, and we’ve been asked from time to time for our advice and insights. So we thought we’d share some of them here, along with some other fun stuff, like interviews with some of the amazing people we work with and behind-the-scenes looks at some of our processes. If you have any questions or topics you’d like to see us cover, let us know! And we know we don’t know everything, so if you have something great to share in a guest post, let us know that too. We’d love to hear from you.
So here we go on our new blogging adventure. Thanks for joining us!
