AUDITION ANNOUNCEMENT — SHE KILLS MONSTERS
Theatre Kraken is casting for She Kills Monsters, to be presented at The Gladstone Theatre
May 15–23, 2020. Directed by Don Fex.
About the Show
She Kills Monsters tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly’s refuge. In this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, and 90s pop culture, acclaimed young playwright Qui Nguyen offers a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all.
January 12 and 13, 2020, starting at 6:00 p.m.
The Gladstone Theatre, 910 Gladstone Avenue, Ottawa
Email email@example.com to request an audition appointment. Please include a resume (doesn’t have to be anything elaborate) and a headshot if you have one (no worries if you don’t).
Please prepare a comedic contemporary monologue, approx. 2 minutes. You may also be asked to read from the script or other material. Readings will be sent out in advance.
You may also be asked to wield a sword (or another weapon — if you have a stage weapon, feel free to bring it and show off a little!).
Open auditions will be held for the following roles. Please note that all stated ages are stage ages.
Tilly: Geeky teenager who’s also a D&D badass. Mid-teens.
Agnes: Tilly’s older sister, a teacher who knows nothing about D&D. Mid-twenties.
Chuck: Dungeon Master extraordinaire, awkward but self-assured. Overweight (as referenced in the script). Late teens.
Lilith: Demon queen. Handy with a battle axe. Mid-teens.
Kaliope: Dark elf. Above human emotions. Mid-teens.
Orcus: Demon overlord of the underworld. Somewhat lacking in ambition. Late teens.
Miles: Agnes’s boyfriend. Buttoned up, probably has a boring job. Mid–late twenties.
Vera: Guidance counsellor colleague of Agnes. Also plays an evil cheerleader and should have some dance ability. Early twenties.
Farrah: A very nasty fairy. Also plays an evil cheerleader and should have some dance ability. Fairly small in stature (as referenced in the script). Early twenties.
Steve: An adventurer. Dies a lot. Late teens.
Notes on the above:
Miles, Vera, Farrah, and Steve will also play a handful of other smaller roles, including various monsters, and will need to operate various puppets.
Stage combat experience would be helpful for all characters, especially Tilly, Lilith, and Kaliope.
Actors of all ethnicities, body types and gender expressions will be considered.
Callbacks will be arranged as necessary.
Please note that this show will be produced under a non-union profit-sharing arrangement.

Audition Auditing Program
Sitting in on auditions can be a very useful experience for young actors who haven't gone on a lot of auditions themselves yet. It can give you a sense of what to expect, what is and is not good audition etiquette, and help to make the whole experience seem less scary for your own next audition.
Theatre Kraken would like to offer up to four young actors (16–24) the opportunity to sit in on an audition session with us. Email us if you're interested. First come, first served.
